Most B2B SaaS marketing teams find out they have an AI visibility problem when someone on the leadership team types their category into ChatGPT and sees a competitor recommended instead. The Slack message from the founder is a pattern we see across every industry we work in.

The person who receives that Slack message has no playbook for it. Traditional SEO does not address this. Content marketing alone does not fix it. ChatGPT and Perplexity do not use Google rankings to decide which brands to recommend. They aggregate signals across review platforms, category listicles, community threads, and comparison content. Your competitor has built those signals at scale. You have not. That is the entire gap, and the gap shows up in four named places.

The four signal categories below come directly from the work we run for B2B SaaS clients through Citation Engineering. Each one is a measurable input into LLM citation decisions, and each one has a number attached.

1. Review platform presence (G2, Capterra, Trustpilot)

Not "they are on G2 and you are on G2." The volume and depth of the profile matters. A competitor with 200 G2 reviews and a complete feature comparison grid gets cited roughly 3x more often than a brand with 40 reviews and a stub profile.

If your G2 profile is incomplete and theirs is filled out, you are losing the citation before the prompt is even run.

2. Category listicle inclusion

"Best [category] tools for SaaS" articles on G2, Capterra, SoftwareAdvice, GetApp, and the top 10 independent blogs in your space. These are the exact pages LLMs pull from when generating recommendations. Inclusion is a direct citation input.

If your competitor is in 15 of these articles and you are in 2, you are losing 13 citation inputs per query.

3. Reddit and community signal

Brands with high mention volume on Reddit and Quora have roughly 4x higher AI citation probability than brands with minimal community activity. Communities are weighted heavily because they read as authentic third-party signal, not paid placement.

One detailed Reddit thread mentioning your brand by name in a buying conversation is worth more than ten of your own blog posts.

4. Comparison content (X vs Y)

The "[Competitor] vs [Alternative]" articles in your category. Whether they exist, whether they include you, and how they describe you. Buyers use these queries directly inside ChatGPT, and the model returns whatever the comparison content says.

If a buyer asks "[Competitor] vs alternatives" and you are missing from every comparison, you are not in the consideration set.

How to Diagnose Your Own Citation Gap in 20 Minutes

Before you talk to anyone, run this. It tells you exactly how bad the situation is and where the gap is coming from. You do not need a tool. You need 20 minutes, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and a Google search.

Step 01 · 5 minutes

Run 10 buyer prompts in ChatGPT and Perplexity

Open ChatGPT in incognito. Run the 10 most likely buyer queries for your category. "Best [category] tool for [use case]." "[Category] software for [team size]." "Top [category] platforms in 2026." Repeat in Perplexity.

What to look for: Which competitor names appear in every response. Which appear in some. Whether your brand appears at all.

Step 02 · 5 minutes

Note the sources the AI cites

In Perplexity, every answer has the source list visible. In ChatGPT, ask a follow-up: "Which sources did you use to recommend these brands?" Write down the URLs. They will mostly be G2, Capterra, top blog roundups, and Reddit threads.

What to look for: Which exact pages, articles, and threads are giving your competitor citation share. These are the surfaces you need to be on.

Step 03 · 5 minutes

Check whether those sources mention your brand

Open each cited source. Use Cmd+F to search for your brand name. Either you are mentioned (good, but not loudly enough) or you are not mentioned at all (the more common finding).

What to look for: The number of cited sources where your brand is missing entirely. That is the gap, expressed in concrete article counts you can fix.

Step 04 · 5 minutes

Compare your G2/Capterra profile to the top competitor

Open both profiles side by side. Count reviews. Check feature comparison completeness. Look at recency of last review. Note category placement and badges.

What to look for: The gap in review volume, profile depth, and recency. If they have 4x more reviews and a complete grid and you have a stub profile, the citation gap is downstream of that.

By minute 21, you will have a list of named pages where your brand is missing, a clear competitor benchmark on review platforms, and a real sense of how big the citation gap is. That is the input we use to build your fix plan.
