Before you talk to anyone, run this. It tells you exactly how bad the situation is and where the gap is coming from. You do not need a tool. You need 20 minutes, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and a Google search.
Run 10 buyer prompts in ChatGPT and Perplexity
Open ChatGPT in incognito. Run the 10 most likely buyer queries for your category. "Best [category] tool for [use case]." "[Category] software for [team size]." "Top [category] platforms in 2026." Repeat in Perplexity.
What to look for: Which competitor names appear in every response. Which appear in some. Whether your brand appears at all.
Note the sources the AI cites
In Perplexity, every answer has the source list visible. In ChatGPT, ask a follow-up: "Which sources did you use to recommend these brands?" Write down the URLs. They will mostly be G2, Capterra, top blog roundups, and Reddit threads.
What to look for: Which exact pages, articles, and threads are giving your competitor citation share. These are the surfaces you need to be on.
Check whether those sources mention your brand
Open each cited source. Use Cmd+F to search for your brand name. Either you are mentioned (good, but not loudly enough) or you are not mentioned at all (the more common finding).
What to look for: The number of cited sources where your brand is missing entirely. That is the gap, expressed in concrete article counts you can fix.
Compare your G2/Capterra profile to the top competitor
Open both profiles side by side. Count reviews. Check feature comparison completeness. Look at recency of last review. Note category placement and badges.
What to look for: The gap in review volume, profile depth, and recency. If they have 4x more reviews and a complete grid and you have a stub profile, the citation gap is downstream of that.
